Parabens are a cheap group of preservatives widely used in topical pharmaceutical products and cosmetics. They are used primarily to prolong shelf life and prevent the growth of bacteria or mould.

Butylparaben, methylparaben and propylparaben are the most commonly found parabens.

Parabens have been linked to serious health concerns such as infertility, cancer, skin sensitivities and allergies.

Parabens are also bad for the environment and marine life. They've been found inside sea creatures and are also believed to damage and kill coral.

There are currently several brands selling 'paraben-free' products so eliminating the harmful preservative from our skincare routine isn't too tough. Just be mindful of what you apply on your skin and stay informed.
