While everyone expected Barbenheimer to rule this year’s Oscars nominations, The Academy gave movie buffs a rude shock when they snubbed Barbie hard. Oppenheimer did get its due recognition but there were some serious snubs and surprises that the Oscars threw at us. Here’s a list.
Margot Robbie
The most shocking of all was the glaring omission of Margot Robbie from the Best Actress list even as Barbie was the highest-grossing film of 2023, critics and numbers alike.
Leonardo DiCaprio
We also thought Leo deserved a mention for his Killers of the Flower Moon role in the Best Actor category, but we know what The Academy thinks of him. Every time we’ve thought he should have won, he wasn’t given the Oscar.
The Color Purple
Among the films, we think The Academy not finding a slot for this film in the Best Picture category is rather surprising. This was the film version of the Broadway musical that had audiences cheering and tearing up, to be fair.
Greta Gerwig
If someone from the film Barbie had to be nominated, it had to be this masterful, visionary director who pulled off such a marvellous film on dolls. The Best Director list feels incomplete without a nod for her.
