Directed by Jonathan Glazer and adapted from novel by Martin Amis, The Zone of Interest could pull off a shocking victory at the 96th Oscars ceremony, pulling the wind from under everyone’s favourite Oppenheimer, if you believe me. 

First case in point is – that the film is based in Holocaust era, a sure shot Oscars favourite subject. There has been chatter for decades that any decent film based on the events of Holocaust, acts like an “Oscar bait”. 

Think Kate Winslet for The Reader, Schindler’s List, The Pianist, Meryl Streep for Sophie’s Choice and many more.

The Zone of Interest has an interesting gaze as it turns towards the oppressor and shows his story instead of how ugly things are in a concentration camp (while it may not be enough, but we’ve seen many of those stories).

The Zone of Interest establishes that the Holocaust time was atrocious but it also tells you that it mattered extremely little to the oppressors. It mattered little to nothing to those outside the camp, doing horrible things to people inside the camp.

The Zone of Interest has five nominations – Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, International Feature Film and Best Sound. The 96th Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby theatre in Los Angeles on March 10.
