5 celebrities who left Scientology & 2 who almost joined

With Tom Cruise in the news for reportedly distancing himself from the Church of Scientology, here’s a look at other high-profile celebrities who have left the controversial religion.

Sharon Stone

She was very interested in Scientology in the 1990s, staying with it for a few years until 1998, when she married journalist Phil Bronstein. She later found Buddhism and has been a follower of the religion since.

Demi Moore

Demi reportedly used to practice Scientology up until she married Bruce Willis. She would attend all meetings but since then-husband Willis didn’t believe in it, she left the church.

Lisa Marie and Priscilla Presley

Daughter of Elvis Presley was a member at one point. She was apparently a high-ranking member of the church but left in 2012, announcing her departure through the song “You Ain’t See Nothin’ Yet.” Her mother, Priscilla Presley, was also left at the same time.

Katie Holmes

The actress became a part of the church post her marriage to Tom Cruise, who has long been pegged as Scientology’s celebrity poster boy, from 2006 to 2012. When they divorced, she asked for full custody of their daughter as she didn’t want their daughter, Suri, raised as a Scientologist.

Jada Pinkett Smith & Will Smith

They were sometimes a part and sometimes not. The couple started a school in California with teaching methods that had ties to the Church of Scientology. But whenever asked about it, they denied being a Scientologist.

Brad Pitt

This one’s a surprise for most. Brad took a few Scientology classes when he was dating actor Juliette Lewis (an avowed Scientologist to this day) but he never joined the religion.

Jerry Seinfeld

Although he was never officially a Scientologist, Seinfeld did take some classes as a means of finding himself.
