Who is Payal Kapadia? First Indian To Win Grand Prix at Cannes

Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia scripted history with a win at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.

The director has become the first Indian filmmaker to win a Grand Prix prize for her movie All We Imagine as Light.

Celebrating Payal's big win, here are a few things about the director that you should know.

Born in Mumbai, Payal is the daughter of artist Nalini Malani. Kapadia did her schooling in Andhra Pradesh, before shifting to Mumbai to pursue a Bachelor's degree in economics from St. Xavier's College.

In 2015, Payal went on to study filmmaking at the Film and Television Institute of India, one of the best film institutions in the country.

During her time at FTII, Payal faced disciplinary action and an FIR when she took part in the protest against the appointment of actor Gajendra Chauhan as the chairman of the institution.

In 2017, her 13-minute film, Afternoon Clouds, was selected for the 70th Cannes Film Festival. Back then, FTII supported Kapadia in her big achievement.

In 2021, Payal garnered everyone's attention when her film A Night of Knowing Nothing won the Best Documentary award at the 74th Cannes Film Festival.
