Cannes Film Festival 2024: 8 Indian Films That Will Be Screened At The Festival 

The 77th Cannes Film Festival is just hours away. The 2024 edition is going to be an important one for Indian cinema as 8 films from the country have been selected under various categories for screening.

All We Imagine As Light

Directed by Payal Kapadia, this is the first Indian film to compete for the Palme d'Or award at Cannes Film Festival after around 30 years. The film talks of two nurses living in Mumbai and how they navigate their lives in a bustling city- find love, friendship and more.

Santosh

British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri's film Santosh has been selected for the Un Certain Regard section of the festival. Not much is known about the plot except that Shahana Goswami portrays Santosh, a young widow who inherits her husband's role as a police constable in the rural region of North India. She starts investigating a case involving a rape of a lower caste woman in a rural area.

Sunflowers Were The First Ones To Know

A film by FTII students, Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know, has been selected for the prestigious La Cinef Competitive section. The 16-minute short tells the story of a village thrown into chaos by an elderly woman who steals a rooster. 

Manthan

Legendary filmmaker Shyam Benegal's iconic film Manthan will showcased at the festival. The film's restored version will be part of the festival this year. The 1976 film by Benegal featured Smita Patil, Naseeruddin Shah, Girish Karnad and Amrish Puri and was inspired by the pioneering milk cooperative movement led by Verghese Kurien.

Sister Midnight

Director Karan Kandhari's film will be premiering at Directors' Fortnight Cannes. It is the only Indian film selected for the Cannes sidebar. It stars Radhika Apte  in the lead. 

Shameless

Konstantin Bojanov’s romantic drama is a Bulgarian film but was shot in India and has Indian actors in cast. The film has been chosen for the Un Certain Regard section of the festival. 

In The Retreat

Maisam Ali, a Ladakh native born in Iran, is the first-ever Indian filmmaker whose film will be screened under the ACID (Association for the Distribution of Independent Cinema) section in Cannes, which promotes independent cinema.

Bunnyhood

Indian filmmaker Mansi Maheshwari has secured a spot in the La Cinef category. The animation director's made the film as her graduation project at the National Film and Television School (NFTS) in London.
