Film stars trying their hand at politics isn’t new even though there have been instances where prominent stars, despite leaving a lasting impression in the film industry, were unable to replicate their success in the political arena.

Amitabh Bachchan

Amitabh Bachchan won the Allahabad Lok Sabha seat on Congress ticket in 1984. Three years later, in July 1987, he resigned from both his position as an MP and his political career due to rumours that he was involved in the Bofors scandal.

Javed Jaffrey

In 2014, Javed Jaffrey became a member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and ran from the Lucknow seat in the general election. Rajnath Singh, the current defence minister, defeated him in the fifth place.

Rajinikanth

In 2018, South superstar Rajinikanth founded Rajini Makkal Mandram (RMM), also known as the People’s Forum. He disbanded the party three years later in 2021, and declared that he had no plans to return to politics.

Sanjay Dutt

In 2009, Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt tried to contest for Lok Sabha from Lucknow as a candidate of the Samajwadi Party. He later withdrew because the Supreme Court declined to stay his conviction under the Arms Act.

In 2014, actress Rakhi Sawant entered the political arena by founding the Rashtriya Aam Party (RAP). She fared poorly in the Lok Sabha election and lost from the Mumbai North-West seat.
