The Election Commission of India (ECI) is a constitutional body responsible for administering elections in India. It was established under Article 324 of the Indian Constitution.
The ECI is an autonomous body and works independently, without any political influence. It is responsible for conducting free and fair elections and ensuring a level playing field for all political parties in India.
The ECI consists of three members — a Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and two Election Commissioners (ECs). They are appointed by the President of India and hold office for six years or until they reach the age of 65, whichever is earlier.
Sukumar Sen was the first CEC of India. He served in the post from 1950 to 1958 and was responsible for conducting the first general elections in independent India.
The ECI introduced EVMs in Indian elections in the 1990s to enhance the efficiency and transparency of the electoral process. EVMs are now used in all elections across the country.
