In Feb 2005, NZ hosted Australia in the first-ever T20I where Ricky Ponting's 98 led to Australia posting 214/5 before the Black Caps folded for 170. The game was a day-night affair at Eden Park, Auckland.
The inaugural T20 WC was held in Sep 2007. It was hosted by South Africa and was a huge hit worldwide, leading to the rise of the format. A bowl-out encounter featuring India and Pakistan set the tone before the same teams met in the final, where MS Dhoni-led Men in Blue won by 5 runs in a cliffhanger in J'burg.
First-ever T20I hat-trick was claimed by Australia's pacer Brett Lee in the inaugural T20 WC, where he dismissed Shakib Al Hasan, Mashrafe Mortaza, and Alok Kapali during his side's clash versus Bangladesh. He, thus, set a new standard in T20 cricket.
In the inaugural T20 WC, Yuvraj Singh of India smashed 6-sixes in an over, off Stuart Broad to enter the record books. His 12-ball 50 remains the fastest fifty in T20Is (among full-member teams).
In the 2016 T20 WC final, England faced West Indies at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Chasing 156, WI were in the hunt courtesy of Marlon Samuels (85*), however, needed 19 off the last 6 balls. With Ben Stokes bowling the final over, Carlos Brathwaite (10-ball 34*) smacked four sixes on the trot to take his side home.
During 2024 T20 WC, New Zealand's Lockie Ferguson created history, becaming the first man to bowl four maiden overs, finishing with figures of 3/0 (4) vs Papua New Guinea
