During India's tour of Australia in 2007/08, the MS Dhoni-led India lost the only T20I to the hosts at the MCG, Melbourne after being dismissed for a paltry 74 (India's lowest T20I score to date). Aussies chased down the target with 9 wickets and 52 balls to spare. It was a shocking defeat for the then T20I world champions.

Asked to bat first in the 2014 T20 World Cup final, India only managed 130-4 versus Sri Lanka, who put on a disciplined bowling performance in Dhaka. In reply, SL chased down the score with 6 wickets and 13 balls to spare. This was a shocking loss for India given they entered the summit clash undefeated.

Batting first, Kane Williamson-led NZ posted only 126-7 against India in the Super 10 clash, in Nagpur, during the 2016 T20 WC. However, the Kiwi spinners rattled India's famed batting line-up for a paltry 79 as the hosts lost shockingly by 47 runs.

During India's 2016 tour of Zimbabwe, the Dhoni-led side lost the 1st T20I to the hosts by two runs, failing in a 171-run chase. After bowling first, India conceded 170-6 but never dictated terms in the run-chase to fall behind, despite the captain remaining unbeaten.

During the 2021 T20 WC, India and Pakistan opened their respective campaigns facing each other in Dubai. Opting to bowl first, Pakistan rode on Shaheen Afridi's 3-fer to restrict India for 151-6, which was easily chased with openers Babar Azam (68*) and Md Rizwan (79*) remaining unbeaten. This was India's maiden defeat vs Pakistan in a WC game.
