Murati, 34, joined OpenAI in 2018 and was named the artificial intelligence (AI) company's chief technology officer (CTO) in 2022. But she has now taken over the leadership role.
Murati graduated as a mechanical engineer from Dartmouth College in 2012. Before OpenAI, the 34-year-old worked at Elon Musk's electric automaker Tesla where she played an important role in the development of Model X. She also has experience in the industries of aerospace and virtual reality (VR).
In a memo to the staff, Murati said she was "honoured and humbled" to step into the leadership role.
