Grenfell Tower tragedy final report lays blame on companies, authorities; key takeaways

Gut-wrenching Grenfell Tower fire incident is to be blamed upon authorities negligence

The Grenfell Tower fire resulted in the loss of 72 lives, a tragedy attributed to failures by the government and the construction industry, as revealed in a damning final report.

Eighteen children were found dead among the 72 people killed in 2017 in the 24-storey block.

The tower block was coated with flammable material due to systematic corruption of the firmsresponsible for the cladding and insulation, inquiry chairman Sir Martin Moore-Bick asserted on Sunday.

The report confirmed that the 72 deaths were the result of the condemned companies’ deliberate and sustained manipulation in the fire safety testing of the tower.

The owner of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC) was also slammed, as was the tenant management organisation that was accountable for Grenfell.

The Crown Prosecution Service made citizens aware that potential criminal charges will not likely be brought until the end of 2026.

Prime MinisterKeir Starmerswore that the government would take action against all the companies who were blameworthy for this devastating incident.

Key points from the 1700-page report:

> The residents of Grenfell Tower were wronged by the authorities and the construction industry.

> The governments of David Cameron and Theresa May were warned about the dangers several times between 2012 and 2017, but no solid action was taken.

> The government and RBKC response was “muddled, slow, indecisive, and piecemeal,” doing the bare minimum for the diverse cultural background, for instance, giving halal food to Muslims over Ramadan.Grenfell Tower had no finalised evacuation system.

> The fire started from a damaged fridge and turned into the worst structural fire Britain has ever witnessed since the Blitz.

> A survivor said, “Those involved have blood on their hands.”

> PM Starmersaid the seven-volume report has found the reasons for the failings in the tower, and the government will ensure this negligence will not occur again.

> The inquiry revealed that the government was aware of the risk of using combustible cladding panels and insulation, particularly in high-rise buildings, but “failed to act on what it knew.”

> Up to 800 people became homeless as a consequence, and the RBKC’s response did very little to deal with the intensity of the tragedy.

> Families who lost everything in the fire were made to wait days before being allocated emergency accommodation in hotels. One pregnant woman was forced to sleep on the floor.

Inquiry chairman Sir Martin Moore-Bick, along with two other panel members, found that “unscrupulous manufacturers” are to blame, as they intentionally engaged in sustained strategies to manipulate testing processes, misrepresent data, and mislead the market.

He advised that as the construction industry has become “too complex and fragmented,” a single person should be appointed for the supervision of construction products.

In response, the group Grenfell United said: “The inquiry report reveals that whenever there’s a clash between corporate interest and public safety, governments have done everything they can to avoid their responsibilities to keep people safe. The system isn’t broken, it was built this way.”
