Disney theme parks in Tokyo will get a 30 per cent expansion, including renovations to both Disneyland and DisneySea parks.
The expansion is aimed at relieving overcrowding problem and to attract more foreign visitors and older customers, as reported by a local Japan-based newspaper.
Since 2013, the theme-parks have reported minimal crowd attraction owing to the problems above, thus making investors focus on re-inventing the public attractions. The investors, according to several media reports in the country, are working now to attract older customers and more foreign visitors in the wake of competition from other theme parks, including Disney's own parks in Shanghai and Hong Kong.
The expansion project is estimated to start in 2025.
Tokyo Disneyland was the first Disney theme park to be built outside the United States, and it’s the only one that’s licensed and operated by an outside company. They are operated by Oriental Land Co., and licensed by the Walt Disney Co.
Tokyo Disneyland opened in 1983 and was an immediate success, leading to the opening of a second park, DisneySea in 2001 which had originally been proposed to be built in Long Beach as part of a larger Port Disney complex. That plan was later shelved.
Attendance declined slightly in both the parks from a peak 31.4 million in 2014 to 30 million in 2016, according to figures published on the Oriental Land Co., website.
