Popular jewellery and accessory maker Claire's has stopped the sale of some of its makeup products after a television news report revealed that its cosmetics for children was contaminated with asbestos.

A local television station in Providence, Rhode Island, reached out to Claire's revealing the contamination -- found after a law clerk from a firm that specialises in asbestos litigation, got the brand's makeup tested and found positive results for the poisonous substance.

Kristi Warner, the Rhode Island-resident who got the tests done told the TV station that she bought the product at a local mall and mailed it to an independent lab in North Carolina. She was quite taken aback with the results as it revealed that there is tremolite asbestos -- toxic, cancer-causing material. This prompted Warner and her boss John Deaton to buy more to solidify their claims and so they bought 17 more Claire makeup products from nine different states, had them tested and found tremolite asbestos in every single product, the report said.

After much investigation, Claire's identified the said products among their long list of cosmetics -- pink glitter makeup sets and bedazzled makeup sets.

The company then went on record to say that they have “taken the precautionary measure of pulling the items in question from sale…and will be conducting an immediate investigation” into the issue.

On Twitter, Claire's said that it has hired an independent laboratory to test the products in question “in order to determine whether the recent news reports are accurate.”

Issuing a statement, the brand said, “At Claire’s the safety of our customers is of paramount importance, and we are passionate about the safety and integrity of our products" and added, "Once we have more information and have the results of the investigation we will take the necessary action. If you have items you wish to return in the interim period we will issue a refund.”

The current list of products taken off the shelf are: Ultimate Mega Make Up Set, Metallic Hot Pink Glitter 48 Piece Makeup Set, Pink Glitter Cellphone Makeup Compact, Bedazzled Rainbow Heart Makeup Set, Rainbow Bedazzled Star Make Up Set, Rainbow Glitter Heart Shaped Makeup Set, Mint Glitter Make Up Set, Rainbow Bedazzled Rectangle Make Up Set, Pink Glitter Palette with Eyeshadow & Lip Gloss.

Claire’s has 2,509 company-operated Claire’s stores in North America and Europe, 709 concession store-in-stores and 532 franchised stores in other geographies, namely the Middle East, Central and Southeast Asia, Central and South America, and South Africa.
