New Delhi, India
Bharat Bandh 2024: The Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti has declared Bharat Bandh (nationwide shutdown) on Wednesday (Aug 21). The body announced a nationwide shutdown to protest against the Supreme Court’s ruling on SC/ST reservations. The SCs/STs from Rajasthan are supporting Bharat Bandh.
As per a report by Times of India, police have been asked to increase their presence across all the districts to avoid tensions. Rajasthan’s DGP, UR Sahoo, said that all the SPs have been instructed to ensure law and order amid the call for a nationwide shutdown.
DGP told TOI, “We have asked our officials to organise meetings with groups calling for the bandh, as well as with market associations, to facilitate better cooperation."
Reasons behind Bharat Bandh 2024
The Supreme Court has given a decision allowing states to bifurcate the STs and SC groups, stating, "Those who need it should get priority in the reservation."
As per several reports, the primary reason behind Bharat Bandh 2024 is to challenge the decision of the Supreme Court on the reservation and demand its reversal.
The Bharat Bandh will be observed by various political and social organisations claiming the decision of the Supreme Court to be unjust.
Bharat Bandh 2024: Security precautions
The decision has ignited debates, and there is a possibility of violence. Therefore, to ensure the safety of people, senior police officers, divisional commissioners, and district magistrates met via video conference to prepare for the Bharat Bandh.
The police officials of Western Uttar Pradesh are on high alert as the region is considered sensitive during protests, and are hence taking extensive steps to ensure the safety of people.
Emergency services, like ambulances, will remain operational, however, public transport and private offices might not be functional.
