Current US President Donald Trump will be fighting to retain his hold on power. He is the candidate of Republican Party. He has a formidable opponent in Joe Biden, who is Democratic Party candidate and also former Vice-President of USA. He served under former US President Barack Obama from 2008 to 2016.
Mike Pence, the current Vice-President, is Donald Trump's running mate while Joe Biden has chosen Kamala Harris as his running mate. If Biden wins, Kamala Harris will be the first woman Vice-President of USA
USA has a two-party system. In United States Presidential Election, the main face-off takes place between the Republican Party and Democratic Party
In a US election, voters do not elect the president directly. USA has an electoral college system. The candidate who secures more than 270 out of 538 electoral votes wins the election. After the popular vote, electors in each state mostly vote for the candidate that the popular vote has favoured.
Not every US state has the same number of electors. Number of electors in a state depends on that state's representation in the US Congress.
In US, there are states in which Republican Party has been dominant traditionally as there are others in which Democratic Party has been dominant.
Swing States are ones who have voted for both parties. A general mood is gauged in these states by both parties before the elections.
In US election 2020, these are expected to be the swing states Florida, Ohio, Arizona, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin
