Kim Jong Un

Kim Jong Un is the supreme leader of North Korea, king of North Korea: Kim Jong-un

The Supreme Leader, Kim Jong-un

Kim Jong-un is the Supreme Leader of North Korea since 2011. Son of Kim Jong-il, the country’s second leader, Kim was born on January 8, 1984 in Pyongyang. As the country’s leader, Jong-un is infamous for picking spats with  other state heads and for his “nuclear bomb” threats. In classic Kim-style, the leader allegedly staged his death in 2020 to check where his cabinet’s loyalties lie, which stirred a storm globally.

Kim Jong-un under constant radar of global media

US President Donald Trump refers to him as a “friend”, but also engages his rhetoric of rage while referring to him. International media condemns Kim for his ruthlessness, with reports of him murdering his close aides on suspicions of disloyalty.

Kim Jong-un known for his hard-hitting rhetoric

In June 2020, the leader ended ties with South Korea, the neighbouring country, while referring to them as “enemies”. Known for amping up country’s military and missile capabilities, Jong-un has been caught using body doubles multiple times amid fears for his life, which the West dismisses as paranoia.

The unequivocal king of North Korea: Kim Jong-un

Kim also serves as the Chairman of the Workers’ Party of Korea, and is also one of the key members of the country’s Politburo of the Workers’ Party of Korea - the country’s highest decision making body.

No “denuclearisation” for Kim Jong-un

World leaders have attempted to pressurise Kim into “denuclearise” the Korean peninsula. But Kim Jong-un hasn’t budged, and continues to host nuclear tests in the country, while continuously issuing threats to other countries like the US. To counter this, US and ally South Korea conduct regular military exercises in the peninsula
