Imran Khan

prime minister of Pakistan Imran Khan

Imran Khan is the 22nd and incumbent prime minister of Pakistan. Before entering politics, Imran had an extremely successful career in cricket, which includes leading his country in the 1992 World Cup victory. Born on November 25, 1952 in Lahore to an affluent family, Khan was educated at elite schools in Pakistan and United Kingdom.

Khan first represented Pakistan in 1971, but became a regular member of the squad after completing his graduation from the University of Oxford. In the 1980s, Khan became a dominant name in cricket because of his sharp fast-bowling and impressive all-round ability. Off the field too, Khan won many hearts with his good looks. After winning world cup for Pakistan for the first and only time so far in 1992, Khan hung up his boots the very same year. Post retirement, Khan became a philanthropist and accumulated funds to open Haukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital in 1994. The hospital was named after Khan's mother who died of cancer in 1985.

Despite publicly saying he is uninterested in politics, Khan founded his own political party Tehreek-e-Insaf in 1996. The party faced huge setbacks in the initial years, but, Khan's populist position resonated among the youth of Pakistan, which includes criticising his own country's cooperation to fight militants in Afghanistan. Following then prime minister Nawaz Sharif's disqualification in 2017 due to charges in Panama Papers case and Khan's talks of eradicating corruption and poverty, he became prime minister of Pakistan in August 2018. After becoming PM, Khan is accused of being too close with country's powerful military and unable to control country's economic crisis and end terrorism.
