Nawaz Sharif's return to Pakistan comes at a time when the nation is being spearheaded by an interim prime minister with elections to be held early next year. In recent years, Pakistan's political landscape has been marked by controversy and allegations of electoral fraud.

Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, which denounced the 2013 elections as rigged, came to power in 2018, leading to Sharif's resignation following a corruption probe.

Nawaz Sharif's return, with the intention of leading the PML-N in the upcoming 2024 general elections, is expected to provide a viable alternative to now-jailed Imran Khan, former envoy Haqqani said.

"He has led PML-N in winning three elections and still retains support in Punjab. That makes him crucial as the alternative to Imran Khan, whom the military previously backed and can no longer accept," he told WION.

Sharif's return also raises questions about the role of Pakistan's establishment, particularly the military.

Earlier, interim PM Anwaarul Haq Kakar reportedly said, “The caretaker government has no soft corner for PML-N or any other political party … how can a caretaker government strike such a deal?”

While Sharif is still barred from participating in elections, his return to Pakistan's political landscape may serve as a stabilising force, potentially facilitating the healing of the country's deep political divisions.

Journey to space

Rubio's journey to the space station occurred through a collaborative arrangement between NASA and Roscosmos, which was established in the summer of 2022 as part of a crew-exchange agreement.

Under this agreement, NASA assigned Rubio to travel aboard the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft, while Roscosmos placed cosmonaut Anna Kikina on a SpaceX Crew Dragon mission that launched in October 2022 and returned on March 11.

Tiger Woods began his highly-anticipated return to competition with a par on his first hole at the Masters on Thursday in front of a throng of patrons thrilled to see the five-time champion back.

Woods, wearing a pink shirt and black pants on his return to the Masters following a February 2021 car crash, was greeted at the par-four 445-yard first hole to a raucous reception from spectators who arrived at Augusta National in the early-morning hours to get a front-row seat.

In his first competitive round of golf in 508 days, Woods sent his opening tee just short of the fairway bunker, watched his approach trickle off the front of the green and then chipped to 10 feet before saving par.

Woods' accident, which nearly resulted in doctors amputating his right leg, cast serious doubt on his professional golfing future but the 15-times major champion said earlier this week that he feels like he can still compete at the highest level.

If Woods, 46, can pull off the unthinkable with a win this week he would become the oldest Masters champion by three weeks over 18-times major winner Jack Nicklaus, who collected his record sixth Green Jacket in 1986.

Defending champion Hideki Matsuyama, who last year became the first Japanese man to win a major championship, was playing in the group behind Woods along with world number seven Justin Thomas and James Piot, who is one of six amateurs in the field.

Rory McIlroy, who needs a win this week to complete the career Grand Slam, is due to go out in the day's final group at 2:33 p.m. ET (1833 GMT) while former champions Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson and reigning U.S. Open champion Jon Rahm were also among the late starters.

The start to the year's first major was delayed 30 minutes due to early-morning thunderstorms but the added wait could not dampen the excitement around Augusta National, which had its usual full house after two years of COVID-19 restrictions.

Festivities began at 8:15 a.m. ET when honorary starters Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Watson, who have a combined 35 major titles between them, got the year's first major underway with their ceremonial tee shots.

Watson, making his first appearance as a Masters honorary starter, addressed the crowd as he approached the first tee where he spoke about what it meant to be part of a tradition that includes Arnold Palmer, Gene Sarazen and Byron Nelson.

"May I say something," the 72-year-old Watson said. "I would like to say how honoured I am to be with Gary and Jack.

Tiger Woods begins highly-anticipated return with opening par at Masters

Afghanistan's main universities reopened Saturday six months after the Taliban returned to power, but only a trickle of women went back to now-segregated classes.

Most secondary schools for girls and all public universities were shuttered following the Taliban's August 15 takeover, sparking fears women would be barred from education -- as happened during the first rule of the hardline Islamists, from 1996-2001.

The Taliban insist they will allow girls and women to be educated this time around -- but only in segregated classes and according to an Islamic curriculum.

Some public tertiary institutions in the south of the country resumed last month, but on Saturday Kabul University, the oldest and biggest with a student body of around 25,000 last year, re-opened without fanfare -- and few students in attendance.

Taliban guards refused journalists access to the sprawling campus and chased away media teams lingering near the entrance.

AFP, however, spoke to some students away from the gates, who expressed mixed feelings after their first day back.

"I am happy that the university resumed... we want to continue our studies," said an English major who asked to be identified only as Basira.

But she said there were "some difficulties" -- including students being scolded by Taliban guards for bringing their mobile phones to class.

Also read | In a first, Hindu army officer Kelash Kumar promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in Pakistan army

"They did not behave well with us... they were rude," she said.

Another English student, Maryam, said only seven women attended her class.

"Before we were 56 students, boys and girls," she said.

No students in Panjshir

There was also a shortage of lecturers, she said, adding: "Maybe because some have left the country."

A similar picture emerged from campuses across the country, although no students returned to class at Panjshir University, in the heartland of a nascent resistance to the Taliban's rule.

"I do not know if they will come tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow, or not," said Professor Noor-ur-Rehman Afzali.

Panjshir was the last province to fall to the Taliban last year, and Jaber Jibran, a faculty head, said several classrooms destroyed in that fighting had still not been repaired.

Some students said they thought many stayed away out of fear of the new authorities, or because they could not afford the fees.

Long dependent on foreign aid for survival, Afghanistan has plunged into economic crisis and the country's overseas assets have been seized by the United States.

"Most of the students might not be able to afford it," said one named Haseenat, while another said her friends had asked her to "report back" on what conditions were like before they decided on attending.

The Taliban have said previously that women students must wear a black abaya over their bodies and hijab on their heads, but stopped short of insisting on the all-covering burqa that was compulsory during their previous rule.

Several students, however, appeared dressed no differently Saturday than they would have before the Taliban takeover, with a simple shawl covering their heads.

"I have never worn any hijab before... it's new for me," said Sohaila Rostami, a biology student in her last semester at Bamiyam University.

"I used to wear jeans and other normal clothes. It will be difficult for me to observe hijab," she told AFP.

In Herat, the ancient Silk Road city near the Iranian border and once one of the Islamic world's most important intellectual centres, students also complained about a lack of tutors.

"Some of our professors have also left the country, but we are happy that the university gates are open," said Parisa Narwan, studying arts.

Tens of thousands of Afghans fled the country as the Taliban stormed back to power -- among them teachers and lecturers who had been vociferously critical of the hardline Islamist group.

Also read | In a first, Hindu army officer Kelash Kumar promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in Pakistan army "They did not behave well with us... they were rude," she said. Another English student, Maryam, said only seven women attended her class. "Before we were 56 students, boys and girls," she said. No students in Panjshir There was also a shortage of lecturers, she said, adding: "Maybe because some have left the country." A similar picture emerged from campuses across the country, although no students returned to class at Panjshir University, in the heartland of a nascent resistance to the Taliban's rule. SpaceX's Inspiration4 mission is now officially a success. The four SpaceX tourists landed in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida Saturday evening after spending three days in space, successfully concluding the first orbital mission in history with no professional astronauts on board.

The SpaceX Dragon capsule's heat shield allowed it to withstand the descent before it was slowed down by four large parachutes and then splashed into the ocean just after 7:00 pm.

"That was a heck of a ride for us, and we're just getting started," said billionaire captain Jared Isaacman, who financed the trip.

The stated goal of the mission, called Inspiration4, was to encourage the democratisation of space by proving that the cosmos are accessible to crews that have neither been handpicked nor in training for years.

The Dragon capsule travelled farther than the International Space Station (ISS) at an orbit of about 575 kilometres (357 miles) high, and circled the globe more than 15 times each day.

This marked the debut flight of SpaceX owner Elon Musk's new orbital tourism business, and a leap ahead of competitors likewise offering rides on rocket ships to customers willing to pay a small fortune for the exhilaration - and bragging rights - of spaceflight.

Isaacman has paid an undisclosed sum to fellow billionaire Musk to send himself and his three crewmates aloft. Time magazine has put the ticket price for all four seats at $200 million.

Inspiration4 aimed for an orbital altitude of 360 miles (575 km) above Earth, higher than the International Space Station or Hubble Space Telescope, and the farthest any human will have flown from Earth since the end of NASA's Apollo moon program in 1972, according to SpaceX.

Warning the return of the Taliban will bring cheer among every jihadist group around the world, former UK PM Tony Blair has said it is now a moral obligation for Western troops to stay until all those eligible are evacuated from Afghanistan.

The former prime minister shared his views over the situation in Afghanistan in a lengthy essay published on his website last night.

Blair, who ordered British troops to join the US-led invasion in 2001, said the hasty US troops’ withdrawal had been a 'tragic, dangerous, unnecessary' decision. It has undermined the West’s aims.

The leader also accused US President Joe Biden of getting motivated by “an imbecilic political slogan about ending ‘the forever wars’, as if our engagement in 2021 was remotely comparable to our commitment 20 or even 10 years ago”.

Blair wrote, “The abandonment of Afghanistan and its people is tragic, dangerous, unnecessary, not in their interests and not in ours. In the aftermath of the decision to return Afghanistan to the same group from which the carnage of 9/11 arose, and in a manner which seems almost designed to parade our humiliation, the question, which allies and enemies alike pose is: has the West lost its strategic will?"

“The world is now uncertain of where the West stands because it is so obvious that the decision to withdraw from Afghanistan in this way was driven not by grand strategy but by politics,” he added.

In a recent development, an iconic bird species, which had been threatened, has now returned to patches of forests that had fallen silent. A kiwi call count is an annual event that uses relatively analogue technology to track how kiwi populations are doing across the region. The data they gather is combined with the “kiwi listening blitz,” which is a higher-tech version, where recording devices are planted and analysed for calls every five years. As per this year's data, 50% of sites that were silent in 2016 had kiwi calling in 2021. She further said that about 150 people crewed listening sites across Northland, and their data goes back 20 years. Also, in some places, kiwi has increased dramatically. The sons of slain Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi on Sunday issued an appeal for the return of their father's body and said they wanted to return to Saudi Arabia to bury him.

In an interview with CNN, Salah and Abdullah Khashoggi said that without their father's body, their family is unable to grieve and deal with the emotional burden of their father's death.

"It's not a normal situation, it's not a normal death at all. All what we want right now is to bury him in Al-Baqi (cemetery) in Medina (Saudi Arabia) with the rest of his family," Salah Khashoggi said. "I talked about that with the Saudi authorities and I just hope that it happens soon."

Jamal Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist critical of the Saudi government and its de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was killed after he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2.

Saudi authorities have admitted that Khashoggi was murdered in a premeditated action, revising previous statements that his death was unintended. Turkish officials and some U.S. lawmakers have said that Crown Prince Mohammed ordered the murder, an allegation that Riyadh denies.

Khashoggi's body has not been recovered, and Saudi authorities are conducting an official investigation.

Saudi Arabian billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, an international businessman, said on Sunday that the probe will exonerate the country's leader.

Salah Khashoggi on Oct. 24 met in Riyadh with the crown prince and King Salman to receive condolences along with other Khashoggi family members. Salah departed for Washington a day later, and his CNN interview was his first public comments since then.

He said King Salman assured him that those involved in Jamal Khashoggi's murder would be brought to justice.

"We just need to make sure that he rests in peace," Salah Khashoggi said of his father. "Until now, I still can't believe that he's dead. It's not sinking in with me emotionally," he said, adding that there has been a lot of "misinformation" about the circumstances of the death.

Salah said that charges that his father was a supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood organization were not true.

Asked how Khashoggi should be remembered, Salah replied, "As a moderate man who has common values with everyone ... a man who loved his country, who believed so much in it and its potential."

"Jamal was never a dissident. He believed in the monarchy, that it is the thing that is keeping the country together. And he believed in the transformation that it is going through."

Neymar already regrets moving to Paris Saint-Germain and is seeking a shock return to Barcelona, according to reports in the Spanish media on Friday.

In the same week that PSG crashed out of the Champions League, and only seven months after he joined the club for a world record 222 million euros ($264 million, Neymar´s future has become uncertain.

Spanish sports newspaper Mundo Deportivo claims the Brazilian, recovering from surgery on a broken foot in Brazil, has made contact with Barca to ask how he can engineer a return.

The article adds Neymar has explained he made a mistake in leaving the club, was wrong to want independence from Lionel Messi and has been disappointed by the standard of opposition in Ligue 1.

Barca, however, is not the only club Neymar is reportedly targeting as a potential way out of PSG.

Madrid-based newspaper AS reports Neymar´s father has met with Real Madrid, who are ready to pay 400million euros to sign the striker.

Asked about the speculation on Friday, Real coach Zinedine Zidane said: "Neymar could play in all the clubs because he is very good, like many players.

"I´m not going to talk about a player that is not mine. On the 400 million, they paid 220 million and when they bought me they paid 72.

"It seemed crazy to me and 10 years later they are paying 220 million. It can be that in the next 10 years someone will pay 400m, or sooner, I do not know."

Neymar wants to return to Barcelona: Spanish reports

The South African side has got some relief as their star batsman AB de Villiers will resume from the fourth ODI against India in a 6 match ODI series.

ABD missed the first three matches because of a finger injury suffered in the third Test against the same opponents last month.

The Proteas were struggling in the ODI series as their players were affected by injury. Although, they played exceptionally well against India in the Test match to win the series by 2-1. The momentum has been lost in the limited overs format.

AB de Villiers was absent from the 1st ODI match, Faf du Plessis ruled out after playing the 1st ODI match and out Quinton de Kock still recovering as he suffered a wrist injury in the 2nd ODI.

India had marked a comfortable win in the previous matches and have taken an unescapable lead 3-0 lead.

The squad, especially the bowling attack is in terrific form. South Africa’s batsmen have struggled, particularly against India’s spinners especially Kuldeep Yadav and Chahal.

AB de Villiers returns to the South African squad for the last three one-day internationals against India, Cricket South Africa announced on Thursday

India won the first ODI at Durban by six wickets, the second ODI by nine wickets and third match won by a massive 124 runs. After winning the last match, India temporarily retained the top ICC ODI spot and looking forward to winning the ODI series after the unfortunate Test loss. The return of De Villiers is the only change to a squad weakened by injuries to regular captain Faf du Plessis and wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock. Squad (TBC): South African: Aiden Markram (captain), Hashim Amla, Farhaan Behardien, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Imran Tahir, Heinrich Klaasen (wkt), David Miller, Morne Morkel, Chris Morris, Lungi Ngidi, Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Khaya Zondo.

AB de Villiers returns for the remaining three ODIs

Rohingya refugees who return to Myanmar from Bangladesh following a repatriation agreement will initially live in temporary shelters or camps, Dhaka said Saturday, a day after the UN raised concern for their safety when they go back.

The United Nations says more than 620,000 Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh since August and now live in squalor in the world`s largest refugee camp after a military crackdown in Myanmar that the UN and Washington have said clearly constitutes "ethnic cleansing".

Bangladesh and Myanmar signed a repatriation agreement on Thursday which would pave the way for the return of the refugees at the "earliest" opportunity, according to the deal, which Dhaka released on Saturday.

"Primarily they will be kept at temporary shelters or arrangements for a limited time," Bangladesh Foreign Minister A.H. Mahmood Ali told reporters in the capital.

The comments come after the UN refugee agency UNHCR on Friday raised concerns over the agreement, saying conditions to enable refugees to safely return to Rakhine State were not in place.

Under the deal, Yangon will "encourage those who had left Myanmar to return voluntarily and safely to their own households" in Rakhine State or "to a safe and secure place nearest to it".

However most of the Rohingya villages were burnt during the violence, Ali said, and refugees would have no choice but to live in temporary shelters there.

"There are no houses. Where will they live? It is not possible to physically (return to their own homes)," he said.

Under the terms of the agreement, Myanmar will ensure temporary shelters are only a short-term option and that refugees` "freedom of movement in the Rakhine State will be allowed in conformity with the existing laws and regulations".

More than 100,000 Rohingya have been living in grim camps for internally displaced persons since violence erupted in Rakhine in 2012.

Rohingya activist Mohammad Zubair told AFP that "Rohingya people will never agree to voluntary repatriation if they are not taken back to their villages and their land returned to them".

He said Bangladesh and Myanmar signed a similar repatriation agreement in 1992, which led to the return of some 200,000 Rohingya to Rakhine, but unresolved problems, including the issue of citizenship, continue to fester.

The stateless Rohingya have been systematically oppressed by Myanmar, which has stripped the minority of citizenship and severely restricts their movement, as well as their access to basic services.

Myanmar`s government says Rohingya are interlopers from Muslim-majority Bangladesh, even though many can trace their roots in Myanmar back generations.

"Unless we get citizenship in Myanmar, no way the Rohingya will this time return to Rakhine," Zubair said.

UNHCR has echoed the concerns of the Rohingya, saying all returns must include "the informed consent of refugees".

According to the agreement, some 700,000 Rohingyas who have fled to Bangladesh since October 2016 will be considered for repatriation.

But that still leaves hundreds of thousands of Rohingya - some of whom fled Myanmar years or decades ago - in Bangladesh.

"The repatriation of residents who crossed over to Bangladesh earlier will be considered separately on the conclusion of the present arrangement," the newly-signed deal said.

Impoverished and overcrowded Bangladesh has won international praise for allowing the refugees into the country, but has imposed restrictions on their movement and said it does not want them to stay.

The new agreement has already drawn criticism at home, with the main opposition party saying "taking steps to repatriate Rohingyas without stopping repression and genocide in their homeland will be tantamount to pushing them to the hell".

Rohingya to stay in temporary shelters after return from Myanmar

Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams has insisted that she has plans to return at Wimbledon in 2017 to mark the 20th anniversary of her first appearance at the All England-Club.

The 36-year-old became the oldest woman to reach the semi-finals at Wimbledon since Martina Navratilova in 1994, but failed to overcome Angelique Kerber to set up a summit clash against sister Serena.

While contemporaries such as Lindsay Davenport and Justine Henin took their retirement long back, a determined Venus said that she is not yet ready to call curtains on her career, Sport24 reported.

Williams made her first Wimbledon appearance in 1997 but lost in the first round to Poland's Magdalena Grzyboswka. Venus believes that an athlete should be more focused on his or her targets instead of age factor.
