Pakistan's ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam were arrested Friday evening at Lahore airport on their return to the country from Abu Dhabi.

Following their arrest, the two were taken to Islamabad via helicopter where they will be lodged in Adiala jail in Rawalpindi.

Nawaz Sharif and his daughter have been charged for corruption case relating to Panama leaks. While Sharif is sentenced for 10 years imprisonment by Pakistan's accountability court, his daughter Maryam Sharif has received a 7-year jail sentence.

The two were convicted in the case on July 6 by Pakistan's Accountability court.

During the court proceedings, Sharif and his daughter Maryam were in London attending Kulsoom Nawaz, Nawaz's ailing wife who is suffering from cancer.

Ahead of his arrival in Lahore, tensions were seen outside the Lahore airport where the city was turned into a fortress with a huge gathering in his support.
