Pakistan's embattled former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has found support in Reham Khan, ex-wife of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan who is widely believed to be leading the popularity chart in the country ahead of the July 25 elections.
"Nawaz Sharif doesn't have to galvanise the support, he has a lot of support in Pakistan," Reham Khan told WION. She lauded the decision of Sharif and his daughter Maryam to return to Pakistan even after knowing that they will be arrested after landing in Lahore.
Sharif and his daughter were sentenced last week by a corruption court over the purchase of high-end properties in London, dealing a serious blow to his Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party's bid weeks ahead of the July 25 polls. While Sharif has been sentenced for 10 years, Maryam will be imprisoned for seven years in the Avenfield case.
Reham also attacked Imran Khan saying he should not become the Prime Minister of Pakistan. "Imran has actually seen a decline in popularity," Reham Khan told WION at the same time implying that the cricketer-turned-politician is being supported by the Pakistan Army. "It is very clear that where the support is coming from and where it is going to," she said.
Reham has written a book which was released on Thursday in which she has alleged that Imran Khan fathered five illegitimate children, some of them in India. "What came to me as a shock was the way Imran trivialised this issue. Such a man should not become the Prime Minister of Pakistan," Reham Kahn said.
I don't think this win is going to give satisfaction to anyone's ego, she added.
Imran and Reham - a British-Pakistani broadcast journalist - married on January 6, 2015, but their marriage ended on October 30 that year itself.
It was a second marriage for both.
