NRC issue won't impact our 'excellent' relationship with Bangladesh: MEA

The Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday stated that the Bangladesh government has described the ongoing process of the NRC draft as an "internal matter of India". The MEA also stated that the issue does not apprehend any impact on India's relationship with Bangladesh. 

"The Bangladesh Govt has taken the view that the ongoing process is an internal matter of India. We do not apprehend any impact on our relationship with Bangladesh which is excellent," MEA stated. 

The statement also noted that India had been in close touch with the Bangladesh government both prior to and following the issuance of the draft.

"We have assured them that it is still a draft list prepared under orders of Supreme Court and the process of identification of citizens of Assam is still underway," MEA noted. 

The second and the final NRC draft was released on July 30 and included 2.89 crore people out of 3.29 crore applicants in Assam. The list left out nearly 40 lakh people.

The first NRC draft for Assam was released on the intervening night of December 31, 2017, and January 1 and included 1.9 crore people out of 3.29 crore applicants.

The draft includes details of all Indian citizens who have been residing in the northeastern state of Assam before March 25, 1971.
