Grey’s Anatomy writer Elisabeth Finch is opening up about all the lies that she’s told including her cancer diagnosis. She said that there was no “no excuse, no justification” for lying about a cancer diagnosis and more. She shared a lengthy statement ahead of the premiere of a new docuseries about the scandal.
For the unversed, Elisabeth Finch infamously lied about having a rare kind of bone cancer called chondrosarcoma. She then wrote an essay in 2014 about her “diagnosis” which led to her getting a job as a writer at Grey’s. While working on the show, she pretended to undergo rounds of chemotherapy, shaving her head and claiming that the treatment had cost her a kidney and part of her tibia and forced her to have an abortion.
The story was accepted worldwide and she ended up gaining sympathy for the same. Also, it led to the makers developing a character who gets diagnosed with chondrosarcoma. It became a popular Grey’s storyline in Season 13.
Elisabeth Finch's lies came out in 2022
Elisabeth Finch’s lies came out when in 2022 a series of investigations into her claims took place. Her medical history became public knowledge.
It was also found out that she had lied about allegations of sexual abuse by a male director on The Vampire Diaries, as well as the suicide of her older brother, who was actually alive and working as a doctor in Florida.
In her statement, Elisabeth said, “I’ve given no one any reason to believe a word I say. I lied about so much; things so many people have been devastated by in real life. ‘I’m sorry’ feels like the smallest words compared to what I’ve done, yet they are the truest. I trapped myself in the addiction of lies, betraying and traumatising my closest family, friends, and colleagues.”
