Christian Bale does the unthinkable again. In new pictures released from Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride, Christian Bale looks unrecognisable as he transforms into Frankenstein’s monster with Jessie Buckley as the eponymous bride. The monster film is a result of collaboration between Maggie and Warner Bros. for the period film.

Maggie took to Instagram to share the images on Instagram.

The Bride will also star Penélope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard and Annette Bening. The film’s crew includes Joker cinematographer Lawrence Sher.

The Bride is set in 1930s Chicago and puts a spin on the iconic Frankenstein lore. Buckley’s murdered young woman is revived, but her new life surprises her creators as she lusts for romance.

The film is Gyllenhaal’s second directorial. She debuted with Netflix’s The Lost Daughter which released in 2021. The movie was an instant hit and earned critical acclaim with recognition at the Oscars too. At the 94th Academy Awards, it picked up three awards – best actress (Olivia Colman), best supporting actress (Buckley) and best adapted screenplay.

Other Frankenstein films on the way

Meanwhile, there are other Frankenstein films on the way in addition to Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride. Guillermo del Toro is currently filming his own Frankenstein, starring Jacob Elordi as the iconic monster. 

Warner Bros. The Bride will release in theaters on October 2, 2025.
