Xiaomi is set to launch the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus smartphones with bezel-less design on December 7. The company has already shared images of its new budget smartphone indicating it will arrive in four color options and now a retailer has jumped the gun to reveal the price.
Ahead of its official announcement, retailer AliExpress has listed the smartphone on its website. The Redmi 5 with 16GB storage is priced at $199.99 (around Rs 13,000) while the Redmi 5 Plus with 32GB storage is priced at $249.99 (around Rs 16,000). The smartphones are being sold by Xiaomi Online Store but the seller’s connection with Xiaomi is not be verified.
The listing also comes with a disclaimer that the Redmi 5 smartphones are still in the pre-sale stage, indicating the listed specifications may not be final. With Redmi 5, Xiaomi is bringing the new FullView display design to the budget smartphone segment. The TENAA listing suggests Redmi 5 will get a 5.7-inch display while Redmi 5 Plus will sport a larger 5.9-inch display. Both the models with support the new taller 18:9 aspect ratio.
The smartphone should be available in three different storage options: 2GB RAM variant with 16GB storage, 3GB RAM variant with 32GB storage and 4GB RAM variant supporting 64GB internal storage. AliExpress has only listed the 2GB RAM and 3GB RAM variants on its website.
The Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus seem to retain the overall design of existing Redmi series with metal body and rear fingerprint sensor. It is expected to run MIUI 9 based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat and will be backed by a generous 3,300mAh battery.
Xiaomi has revived its smartphone business after a brief period of decline in sales with the launch of Redmi Note 4 and the Redmi 4 series this year. With the new Redmi 5, the Chinese smartphone maker seems to have another big hit under its belt.
