US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump received the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House in Washington.

This is the first time that the two leaders are holding a bilateral meeting.

The meeting is expected to further consolidate the strong ties between the two countries.

Welcoming PM Modi, Trump said that Modi "has been such a great prime minister" and that India is doing very well economically.

Modi thanked President Trump for his warm welcome.

PM Modi will hold a 20-minute one-on-one meeting with President Trump in the Oval office followed by delegation level talks.

The two leaders are expected to talk on a range of issues including strategic issues.

According to Reuters, a Pentagon agency said that the US State Department has approved the possible sale to India of a Boeing C-17 transport aircraft with an estimated cost of $366 million.

This is in addition to the 22 Predator Guardian drones that the US will supply to India.

Just before the two leaders met, the US department of state designated Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin as a global terrorist in what came as a vindication of India's stand.

The US President will also host PM Modi for a dinner in what will be the first working dinner for a foreign dignitary hosted by President Trump.
