US President Donald Trump was in Paris, France, to meet French President Emmanuel Macron on the occassion of Bastille Day. Observers hoped the old allies would improve relations, after Trump reversed Obama's commitments to the Paris climate accord.

As often happens under this administration, the political substance was overshadowed by the antics of the US President.

President Trump commented on the physical appearance of Macron's wife. He told her, "You're in such good shape...beautiful."

Many on social media were quick to point to Brigitte Macron's body language, noticing that she seemed to tense up and pull away after the remarks.

The online response was decidedly critical. The website Slate referred to the "particular grossness" of the comment.

Social media users noticed Brigitte's body language, and remarked that this is a pattern Melania may be used to.

One user alluded to Trump's past: During last year's election he was accused of sexually assaulting multiple women, and also made the notorious comment on audio recording about grabbing women by the "p*ssy".

This user called the president "condescending, sexist incredibly unworthy..."
