Climate policy is expected to be a significant bone of contention at the summit which is being hosted by German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday and Saturday.
In a joint communique issued as the leaders gathered in a vast convention centre, the BRICS countries called on the G-20 to push for implementation of the Paris climate deal despite Trump's decision last month to pull the United States out of it.
