The officers had arrived at a possible domestic dispute when they were shot at, Reuters reported.

The Palm Springs police department identified the fallen officers as Jose Vega, a 35-year veteran, and Lesley Zerebny, who had started her career a year and a half before.

Police chief Bryan Reyes praised the police officers for their hard work and sacrifice.

"Today Palm Springs lost two brave officers. They go out every day and put their boots on the ground for everybody in this community. They gave it all for you," Reyes said.

The shooting was believed to have unfolded near the intersection of North Sunrise Way and East Racquet Club Road, AFP reported the police as saying.
