3 dead, over 200 injured after earthquake hits western Japan
An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 hit western Japan on Monday morning causing scattered damage including broken glass and partial building collapses. Japanese disaster authorities informed that three people were found without vital signs and over 200 others were injured by an earthquake
Amongst the dead was an elderly man and a young girl, with several other people also in "cardiopulmonary arrest" after walls collapsed, Reuters reported.
The epicentre of the earthquake was in the northern part of Osaka Prefecture, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, and no tsunami warning was issued.
Kansai Electric Power said no irregularities had been detected at the Mihama, Takahama and Ohi nuclear plants after the quake.
It also said there were more than 170,000 households without power in Osaka and neighbouring Hyogo prefecture.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters the government was "working united, with its first priority on saving people's lives."
Abe said he had instructed his staff to "swiftly collect information on damage, make utmost efforts in rescuing and saving lives and provide timely and appropriate information to the public."
