At least 25 people, including students, have been killed in a fire at a religious school in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Reuters reported.

"The number of confirmed dead are 23 students and two wardens," Khirudin Drahman, director of Kuala Lumpur's fire and rescue department told AFP.

The fire at the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah was reported at 5.40 am (2140 GMT Wednesday), the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department said.

The blaze started in bedrooms before dawn and firefighters from a nearby station reached within minutes, according to a fire department official.
