Militants attacked a police checkpoint north of Tikrit and then detonated a car filled with explosives near the city entrance, Iraqi police and military sources said.

Twelve people, including four police officers, were killed in the twin attack.

Gunmen opened fire at the checkpoint, killing four policemen. One of the assailants was killed as well.

Two of the militants then drove on for about 7 km to the city limits before detonating the explosives in the pickup truck, killing eight civilians and wounding 23.

This is the first attack since Baghdad was reclaimed from IS in April 2015. No militant organisation has claimed responsibility for the attack as of yet.
