Syrian migrant Jaber Albakr suspected of planning a bomb attack on a Berlin airport has committed suicide in police custody in Leipzig, Germany.
The 22-year-old was under police surveillance for months but had managed to escape when police raided his house. He was nabbed on Monday after a two-day hunt with the help of three Syrians in whose flat he sought refuge, one of whom alerted the police.
"Jaber Albakr took his own life in the Leipzig prison hospital," the regional government in Saxony said in a statement without elaborating, AFP reported.
While Germany’s Spiegel Online said it was not yet clear how he had killed himself, Bild daily reported he was found hanging in his cell.
Albakr had been under round-the-clock watch due to an acute risk of suicide and hunger strike, Spiegel Online said.
