The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is mulling whether it should open an investigation into reports that the actor Brad Pitt abused his children.

Media reports had stated that Pitt had begun yelling and “getting physical” with his children on a private jet.

An investigation “regarding allegations within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States” has been opened, an FBI statement read.

“The FBI is gathering facts and will evaluate whether an investigation at the federal level will be pursued," it added.

The Los Angeles Police Department’s spokesperson, however, told AFP, “We have no report in our record for any filings for Brad Pitt, we are not having any investigations regarding Brad Pitt.”

Pitt’s alleged verbally and physically abusive behaviour toward his children is being reported to be the reason behind Angelina Jolie’s decision to end their marriage.

Jolie, 41, filed for divorce from Pitt, 52, on Monday citing irreconcilable differences and seeking custody of their six children.
