A powerful blast killed at least ten people and injured 147 in China's northwestern Shaanxi province on Monday, state media Xinhua agency reported.

Eleven of the injured are being treated in an intensive care unit.

The explosion occurred in Fugu County of Yulin city on Monday afternoon, damaging several buildings including a hospital.

The blast may have been caused by illegally stored explosives, AFP reported citing residents of the area.

An official probe has been set up to find out the cause of the blast, Xinhua reported.

Firefighters and rescuers were still looking for people trapped under the debris.

Images released by Xinhua showed a large crater at the epicenter of the blast.

China has a bad safety record, with previous blasts blamed on poorly stored chemicals or industrial explosives which are easy to get hold of due to their use in China's booming coal mining sector.

A series of powerful explosions last year at a chemicals warehouse in the northern city of Tianjin killed 165.
