At least seven people were killed and several wounded when a powerful blast struck the Syrian capital on Thursday.

According to state media, a suicide bomber blew himself in the Kafr Sousa neighbourhood of Damascus, an area with heavy security presence.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the death toll was likely to go as several were in critical condition.

State media SANA aired footage of wrecked cars, blood splattered and dozens of security personnel at the site of the blast.

In July 2016, a car bomb exploded in Kafr Sousa near an Iranian school, killing several people.
