Top seed Serena Williams was dumped out of the US Open by Karolina Pliskova on Friday.

Pliskova beat Williams 6-2 7-6 (5) to enter her maiden US Open final.

The tenth seed will either play Angelique Kerber or Carolina Wozniacki in her first grand slam final.

The loss means that Williams will relinquish her number one ranking to Kerber.

''My goal was to beat Serena. I don't care who I play in the final,'' Pliskova said in an on-court interview, moments after winning the match.

Pliskova was the dominant player in the first set, winning it in just 26 minutes.

The second set was a more even contest as Williams found her bearings to get into the match. But she double-faulted on match point to gift her Czech opponent her maiden entry into a grand slam final.

Williams was bidding to win her 23rd grand slam, an Open-era record.
