World number Serena Williams beat Yaroslava Shvedova in straight sets to book a spot in the quarter-finals of the US Open.

Serena's 308th victory meant she crossed Roger Federer in the all-time list of grand slam wins among both men and women.

She will next face Romania's Simona Halep, the fifth seed who beat Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2 7-5.

Serena's sister Venus Williams however suffered a heartbreak as she lost a third set tie-breaker to Karolina Pliskova.

On the men's side, Stanislas Wawrinka and Juan Martin del Potro set up a mouth-watering last eight clash at Flushing Meadows.

While 2009 champion Del Potro progressed to the quarter-final after Dominic Thiem, trailing 3-6 2-3 retired with a knee injury, Wawrinka overcame a stubborn Illya Marchenko 6-4 6-1 6-7 (5-7) 6-3.

Del Potro, who is coming off multiple wrist surgeries, had beaten two-time grand slam champion Wawrinka in Wimbledon this year. The Argentinian leads 4-2 in their head-to-head meeting.

Japan's Kei Nishikkori also moved in to the last eight by beating Ivo Karlovic in straight sets. He awaits the winner of the Andy Murray-Grigor Dimitrov match.
