Serena Williams lost the US Open 6-2, 6-4 to Japan's Naomi Osaka in a much-hyped yet controversial finale.

Serena was handed a coaching violation and a point penalty for breaking her racquet after a heated argument with umpire Carlos Ramos. The lost point cost Serena a game.

The match officials have mixed opinions on the controversy.

While Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic shared his views on the scandal surrounding the US Open women's singles final.

Men's champion Novak Djokovic treaded warily when asked to weigh in on the matter.

Djokovic noted that it was an "awkward situation" for both competitors and "tough" for the umpire.

"I have my personal opinion that maybe the chair umpire should not have pushed Serena to the limit, especially in a Grand Slam final," he said.

The former world number was fined $17,000 for the code violations she received during the match.

"He did change the course of the match. It was, in my opinion, maybe unnecessary. We all go through our emotions, especially when you're fighting for a Grand Slam trophy.

However, he said he wasn't sure sexism was at the root of Ramos's decisions.

"It's hard to generalize things," he said.
