Challenge Cup of Asia 2017: Indian women's ice hockey team wins first match

Indian Women's Ice Hockey Team registered their first victory in an international match on Thursday after beating Philippines at the 2017 IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia in Bangkok.

The Indian team scored their first goal in the second period and carried the match with a clear 1-0 advantage.The last period of the match saw both the teams fight out for the top with both teams scoring 3 goals each. But India’s lead of 1 goal in the second period, led the Indian women’s team to win by 4-3.

Indian Women Ice Hockey's Team got their first international exposure last year, when they participated in the 2016 Challenge Cup of Asia in Chinese Taipei. The sporting event aims at supporting ice hockey friendly countries in Asia. 

This year, for the team to participate, they carried a fundraising campaign. The 28 women team, had nothing to start with: funds for travelling, jersey, training equipment and other requirements of playing the sport. With the help of a crowdfunding campaign, some 3000 donors came together to fund the journey of the Indian team to becoming victorious.
