Venkaiah Naidu sworn in as Vice-President of India

M Venkaiah Naidu will take oath as the vice-president of India today. Naidu had beaten Opposition nominee Gopalkrishna Gandhi in the vice-presidential elections on Saturday bagging 516 votes with Gopalkrishna Gandhi getting 244 votes.

Venkaiah Naidu will become India's 13th vice-president after he is sworn in at Rashtrapati Bhawan at 10:30am (local time).

India's new vice-president Venkaiah Naidu born to a humble agricultural family in Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district, the 68-year-old has served as BJP president including as a minister in various portfolios and has been a long-time Rajya Sabha member.

Vice-president Naidu is known for his oratory. A two-term member of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha three times from Karnataka. He represented Rajasthan in the Upper House of Parliament before he was nominated to the vice-president's post by the NDA.

President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of office and secrecy to Naidu at a ceremony in the Durbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhawan.
