The terrorists ambushed the vehicle in which the policemen were travelling and made off with their weapons after killing them
Six policemen were killed when heavily-armed terrorists attacked a vehicle in which they were travelling in the outskirts of Kashmir's Anantnag district.
Those who were killed included the Station House Officer of Achabal area.
The policemen were shot by the terrorists from close range. After killing them, they escaped with their weapons.
The terrorists had laid a trap on the Anantnag-Achabal road. The police party was not travelling in a bullet-proof vehicle.
All six policemen including Feroz Ahmed, a 2010 batch Sub-Inspector, died on the spot.
"It is an unfortunate incident to have lost six men including Sub-Inspector Feroz, a resident of Pulwama. Their contribution to the police service will be remembered," Director General of Police S P Vaid told news agency PTI.
The combing operations are underway in the area.
The attack comes on a day when the security forces eliminated Lashkar commander Junaid Mattoo along with one more terrorist in Kashmir's Kulgam district.
Others who have been killed in the attack include constables Sharik Ahmad and Tanveer Ahmad (Budgam district), Sheraz Ahmad (Achabal), Asif Ahmad and Sabzar Ahmed (Anantnag).
Lashkar-e-Taiba has claimed responsibility for the attack.
