Police file rape charges in Indian actor's sexual assault case

Police have filed rape charges against people who allegedly abducted a popular Indian actress from the south in Kochi on Friday night.

So far, police have arrested ten people in total in connection with the case, including the main accused Sunil Kumar, who also goes by the name of Pulsar Suni, India Today reported.

On Friday, the actor, who has starred in over 70 films in India's southern state of Kerala, was abducted and sexually assaulted by a gang of men.

The accused men got into the actress' car near Athani in Angamaly and assaulted her till the car reached Palarivattom in Ernakulam. The men allegedly took photos and videos of her to blackmail her.

The actress was then released. 

She later spoke to the police and gave them a statement.

Meanwhile, the film fraternity will stage a demonstration at Ernakulam at 6pm today (February 20).

The incident has been roundly condemned by the film fraternity, including Prithviraj Sukumaran, Manju Warrier and Rima Kallingal.
