Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi criticised party leader Sandeep Dikshit for comparing Army Chief General Bipin Rawat with a goon on the street.

"Dikshit's remark was absolutely wrong," Rahul Gandhi said while addressing a meeting of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) meeting.

"The Indian Army works for the country and there is no need for any political leader to make comments against the Army chief," he added.

Sandeep Dikshit, a former legislator and the son of former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, had called the army chief a "sadak ka gunda".

Sandeep Dikshit triggered widespread outrage for his remarks, for which he later apologised.

The BJP has also asked Congress President Sonia Gandhi to apologise.
