Hari Swami, 54-year-old godman from Kerala whose genitals were chopped off by a young woman for allegedly raping her for years was formally arrested by the police Saturday. He remains hospitalised in the southern state's capital Thiruvananthapuram.

The 23-year-old woman has been charged with voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons, a bailable offence, a police official said. She is under police protection and is receiving trauma counselling, AFP reported earlier.

The woman, whose name is being withheld, cut off the genitals of the godman, a day earlier after accusing him of sexually harassing her for years.

Hari Swami underwent plastic surgery at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital after the woman severed almost 90 per cent of his genitals.

Doctors say he is now out of danger and will be produced before the magistrate once he is discharged from the hospital

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan came out in support of the woman on Saturday. Asked if strong action had taken place against the accused, he replied that strong action had already taken place and "all we need is to extend our support to her."

The woman, a law student, was at her residence Thiruvananthapuram late Friday when she says she was attacked by the godman, who had claimed to her family to be a religious guru.

"She used a knife in her defense and cut off his penis," district police chief G Sparjan Kumar told AFP.

The man was rushed to the hospital in a serious state.

Panmana Ashram, the Hindu ashram near Kollam to which the Swami was reportedly linked, says it had nothing to do with the godman.

Authorities there said the godman was removed from the rolls long back.
