It is not known why the suspected militants attacked Malik, but the killing is again indicative of the worsening situation in Kashmir.

Militants in Kashmir have of late taken to targeting local army and police personnel.

In May this year, militants kidnapped and killed Lt Ummer Fayaz who was home on leave from the army.

Fayaz was Kashmiri.

He was abducted from a cousin's wedding which he was attending at the time.
