Former media executive Indrani Mukerjea's lawyer has accused jail staffers in Mumbai’s Byculla Jail of assaulting her after she was booked for rioting following the death of an inmate on Saturday, ANI reported.
Her lawyer, Gunjan Mangla, has filed an application with a special CBI court in Mumbai claiming that Mukerjea was beaten at the jail.
In the application, Mangla says that bruise marks can be seen all over Mukerjea’s body.
According to NDTV, Mukerjea has crucial information about the killing of a 45-year-old inmate, Manju Govind Shette, last week. She alleged that the jail staff threatened her with sexual assault if she testified about Shette’s death.
Mukerjea has informed a Mumbai court that she would like to testify about the inmate's death, NDTV further reported.
Police said Shette was allegedly tortured and a stick was inserted in her genitals.
The special CBI court has ordered Indrani Mukerjea to be present in the court tomorrow.
Mukerjea was among 200 inmates who have been booked for rioting.
Shette died on Friday night after allegedly being beaten up by a female prison official.
Following Shette’s death, Mukerjea, along with others inmates began protesting against the jail staff on Saturday morning.
A First Information Report was filed against six jail staffers following the incident.
On 25 August 2015, Indrani Mukerjea was arrested by Mumbai Police in connection with the alleged murder of her daughter, Sheena Bora, in 2012.
