One of the four convicts sentenced to death in the infamous 2012 gang rape case in India's national capital attempted suicide in jail today.

According to ANI, convict Vinay Sharma attempted the suicide in Tihar Jail in Delhi and has now been admitted to hospital.

Last year, Sharma had moved court demanding security after he was allegedly beaten up and abused by inmates.

In March 2013, one of the convicts, Ram Singh, had committed suicide in the same jail. But his family members claimed it was murder.

The horrific gang rape of a  23-year-old woman perpetrated by six people, including a minor, on December 16, 2012 in a bus had sent shockwaves across the world. Activists and citizens took to streets after the incident to demand stricter laws for crimes against women.

Jyoti Singh, the victim, died in a Singapore hospital on December 29.

The gang rape incident had sparked fresh outrage in 2015 when one of the convicts in the case, Mukesh Singh, made certain controversial comments in a documentary by an international filmmaker Leslee Udwin, that showed he felt no remorse for his acts.
