A Dehi man chopped off his daughters ears because, so he claims, he believed a "ghost" would take her away if he didn't, ANI reports.

Delhi police arrested the man, 35, named Amrit Bahadur. The incident took place at about 1:30am on Thursday.

Family told the police that the father has been "mentally disturbed" since the death of his baby daughter a few months ago.

Since that happened, he has had hallucationations about a "ghost" who threatened to also take away his second child.

The district chief of police explained some background information to ANI:

"Bahadur works in an unorganised sector as a cleaner. He came to his house around 1:30 am and he was drunk. He was having hallucinations. He felt that something is there that's compelling him to do this act and if he does not do that then he may lose his daughter. Therefore, he said that he chopped off the girl's ear. In the meantime, the family woke up and called up the neighbours who informed the police and the girl was rescued," DCP (Shahdra) Nupur Prasad told ANI.

The girl was referred to AIIMS hospital.
