The BJP will ask its MPs absent from the Rajya Sabha on Monday for an explanation, the news agency PTI reported.
PTI reported union minister Ananth Kumar as saying the BJP president Amit Shah had taken a serious view of the absence of the MPs.
And that he had asked the MPs to ensure that it was not repeated.
The absence of the BJP MPs allowed the Opposition to push through amendments to a bill to grant constitutional status to the National Commission for Backward Classes.
The setback has embarrassed the government, which has piloted the National Commission for Backward Classes Bill with an eye on backward caste votes.
The Times of India newspaper reported that there were a number of big BJP names missing from Rajya Sabha on Monday. The missing included Vijay Goel, Nirmala Sitharaman, Smriti Irani, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Dharmendra Pradhan, Piyush Goyal, MJ Akbar, and Ramdas Athawale
The Hindu newspaper reported that the absences have drawn Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ire -- Modi has warned BJP MPs earlier not to skip Parliament -- and that he has asked for a list of the absent MPs.
